Choosing your first flexographic label press

Number of print stations

Six stations covers almost every commercial label job: four process colors plus two spot colors or a white and a varnish. Fewer than four limits you to simple work; more than eight only pays off in specific markets.

Web width

The width you choose locks in your material and tooling costs for years. 250–350 mm is the sweet spot for a starting plant.

Servo or gear driven

Gear-driven presses are cheaper to buy and simpler to maintain, but every job change means changing gears and print cylinders. Servo presses cost more and cut make-ready time drastically — which matters when your average run is short.

Curing

UV curing handles filmic materials and gives instant cure; water-based drying is cheaper to run but limited on films. Most label work today is UV.

Inspecting a used press before buying

Check anilox condition, print cylinder bearings, register repeatability at full speed, and ask for a print sample produced on the machine that day.
